The new year is here, and with it comes new beginnings! That means now is the time, more than ever, to begin to make a change in your life and your apartment. What better to manifest this than by taking some time to organize your apartment? You never know – changing up your apartment can usher in other changes to your life! Here are six organization tips for your apartment to get you hitting the ground running into the new year.
1. Remember to Use Your Walls
Your storage space doesn’t have to be confined to your closets and cabinetry – you can utilize bookshelves pushed against the walls of your apartment! You can also add hooks around your home to hang various accessories like hats and gloves. This is the easiest way to both expand your apartment storage, as well as using up the extra empty space your walls have.
2. Trade Your Coffee Table for an Ottoman
While coffee tables are nice for showcasing books and your various remote controllers, there usually isn’t enough space to store anything else. Instead of coffee tables, get ottomans – they’re a versatile way to store extra blankets, pillows, books, and more! Plus, they double as footrests or as extra seats when guests are over.
3. Utilize Your Bed as Storage
The space over, under, and around your bed is the perfect opportunity for extra storage! You can begin by elevating your mattress and using the space underneath your bed for various storage boxes, crates, or rolling bins to store everything from clothes to books. Over your head, you can hang shelves to hold extra books and accessories above your bed. A nice, stylish way to increase the storage possibilities in your bedroom is by installing a bed frame that has storage capabilities. This can be a headboard with shelves on the side or a footboard that can double as a TV console!
4. Put Away Your Laundry Fast
Get a dedicated laundry basket for all of your dirty clothes – they can accumulate fast in an apartment! Remember to do your laundry often in order to prevent your hamper from filling up and to keep yourself on a schedule. Once you’re done with your laundry, fold and put away your clothes to declutter and keep your space clean.
5. Use the Back of Doors
Doors themselves can function as extra mini storage spaces! Try hanging hooks for your coats and shoe organizers on the back of your bedroom door for easy access. Your kitchen cabinet doors can be used for extra storage space for anything from spice and ingredients shelves to garbage cans.
6. Minimize the Number of Things You Have
This tip is an oldie, but a goodie. Get rid of things you don’t need to prevent clutter, and to keep your apartment more organized. If you feel that after organizing everything in your apartment that you still feel a bit stuffed, that may be a sign that it’s time to reduce. Remember to always donate things that are still in good condition! As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
